The Pimoroni Infrared (IR) break-beam sensor is a simple and reliable solution for detecting motion and objects. The sensor consists of two parts: an IR emitter and a receiver. The emitter produces infrared light invisible to humans, and the receiver detects this light. When an object passes between the emitter and the receiver, the beam is interrupted and the receiver signals the event.

This 5 mm IR version works up to 50 cm distance. The sensor can be used with either 3,3 V or 5 V supply, with 5 V providing better range. The receiver uses an open-collector output, so a pull-up resistor is required for digital reading. In most microcontrollers this can be implemented with an internal resistor. If needed, a separate 10 kΩ resistor can be used. Sensors are supplied with tinned wire ends for easy connection.
